Frequently Asked Questions

OBDC Mission

OBDC is dedicated to enriching the lives of our members with fascinating trips all over the globe, striving to develop friendships and great memories for women divers and their guests.
  • What do the initials O.B.D.C. stand for?

    • Officially, nothing.
    • Unofficially, men over 50 think that OBDC stands for Only Babes Dive Club.
    • Men under 50 think that OBDC stands for Old Broads Dive Club
    • We also like the sound of Outrageous Beauties Dive Club!

  • Where does OBDC Dive?

    • OBDC will dive anywhere its members think would be a fun and safe destination for our group. However, we tend to follow the 80/80 rule of diving. 80 ft or better visibility and 80 Deg or better for the water temp. (Princess Diving).

  • Can family members and friends participate in OBDC trips and functions?

    • Yes. Husbands, boyfriends, children, relatives and friends who are accompanied by an OBDC member may attend meetings, go on dive trips, come to parties, etc.

  • What's the average age of the members?

    • Good question! No one knows. Everybody feels and thinks young, though!

  • Do I have to live in Southern California to join?

    • Definitely not. We have members from all over the U.S., Canada, Mexico, Cayman Islands, Palau, New Zealand and Italy.

  • Do I have to be a certified scuba diver to join?

    • - No. About 70% of our members are certified scuba divers. The rest are snorkelers and some just enjoy the beach and ocean.

  • How many trips do you take each year and how much do they cost?

    • Normally we schedule four (4) "official" trips per year. Most trips are to dive locations like the Caribbean, Hawaii, Fiji, Beliz Honduras, Bahamas, and other warm-water sites.
    • Prices vary. But, since we usually have 10 or more members going on a trip, we get the very best prices from our travel providers. We use our group rebates to fund our parties, meetings, newsletter and other activities.

  • What if I want to go on additional trips and learn more about diving and photography?

    • No problem. Some of our members organize their own trips or sign up with trips offered through Orange County dive shops. In addition, some of our members also belong to the Orange County Underwater Photographers Society. The monthly OCUPS meetings include a slide show, a photo educational portion, an opportunity to share and critique your own work and make new friends that share your passion for underwater photo photography.

  • How much are the dues?

    • $10 per year.
    • $100 for a Lifetime Membership.

  • How often are meetings?

    • Four times a year on the first Wednesday of February, May, August and November.

  • Who goes on a typical dive trip?

    • About 70% of those who go on our trips are women.
    • Some are single, some married, some divorced and some widowed.
    • Some bring their husbands or boyfriends, rarely do they bring both!
    • Certain trips are to dive-golf destinations. In this case, more couples go.
    • Although children are welcome on any of our trips, they rarely go. That's why husbands don't go as often . . . who's going to take care of the children while we're off diving and relaxing?
